Tanzanite was unknown to the world until it's discovery by Massai tribesmen in 1967. Tanzanite is a form of zoisite, and is normally gray until it's exposed to extreme heat. In what was a fortunate accident for jewelry lovers the world over, lightning started a bush fire near a deposit and the tribesman found it. It made its way to Tiffany and Company in 1969, and they introduced this special gem to the world.
