So you found that beautiful tanzanite stone, and have been very happy with. However, one day it was scratched- is it beyond repair?

The short answer is no, however you must be careful to make sure you take the right steps to get it fixed. The best choice is to take it to a reputable jeweler, who is familiar with exotic gemstones, Tanzanite requires special handling by a stone cutter, they are temperature sensitive and can be damaged if not handled with care. Also, this process (re-polishing) is not inexpensive, the tanzanite stone must be large enough, and of a high enough quality, to justify the repair. It's a good idea to get a professional appraisal (ie Gemology Laboratory) on your tanzanite stone before commissioning repairs.

A less expensive alternative would be to find a Gemologist Club that can cut and polish stones. The clubs are frequently run by a skilled gem enthusiast and can offer the services at a considerable discount. Of course you don't have the same guarantee and backing of a major jewelry store, so it's a trade off. Because tanzanite stones are softer, and somewhat brittle, they require special care. A scratched tanzanite stone isn't ruined, but it's not an easy nor inexpensive fix, protect your stones and treat them gently, and they'll last a lifetime.
